When I think of summer vacation, I think of relaxing, sleeping in, staying up late, and the beach. And for me, this summer included packing up our whole house and moving. Not just moving to a new house, but moving across the country!
For the past six years, hubs and I have lived in Las Vegas. Well, he was there for about 20 years. Since he was somewhat of a late bloomer and went back to school in his 30’s, he actually got something out of college. Wanting to go for more, he finished his master’s and then he started applying for a PhD. Wow. I never knew that applying for a school could be so stressful, crazy, competitive and exciting at the same time. Not having any idea how this would go—he applied all over—he mailed off the apps and we crossed our fingers!
In April, we got the call for an interview and three days later got the acceptance email to Mississippi State University! And then the whirlwind started—cleaning, packing, yard sale, more packing, load the truck, drive across the country, unload the truck, try to get our house into our new apartment and breathe at the same time! Needless to say, baking and blogging was not at the top of my to-do list!!
We had about six weeks to get everything in order before the move down south. I was excited to be going back to the south and we were both excited to be getting out of the desert. And of course, we were both beyond excited that hubs was accepted at MSU for this year.
Leaving Las Vegas was bittersweet. I will always be thankful that I moved there. I met the love of my life there, did things I never imagined I would do, fell in love with teaching again and started a new love of baking. But, we also had to leave hub’s family and our friends. We were sad to leave them, but could not wait to get started on the next chapter of our lives. The truck was gone, our cars were packed and we started the drive to Mississippi. If only we didn’t have to unpack it all!
Three days of driving and were in our new home. Now for the fun part—unloading. After about 10 hours, we finally had all 19 feet of our ABF truck unloaded. We had nothing but a maze of boxes crammed into out new place. Slowly but surely, we got it all together. We even managed to squeeze in some beach time with the folks and mountain time with the bro and his fam. We have been in town for a little over a month and finally feel settled. We love our little college town!
I know that the next year four years are going to be crazy busy and new for us. But I am so glad that we are in our new home. The town is small , but big enough and has a certain quaintness to it that is just wonderful. I am so proud of hubs—he worked to so hard to get here. We have no idea what is in store for us, but are excited to see what comes next. We talked about this day for so long and are so glad that it is finally here and we are in our new home.
Now that all the pans are unpacked and everything is in order, it is time for the baking to begin!! I have started on a couple of things and am excited to get caught up on my blogging. I am soooo excited to be back in the south again and can’t wait to see what the next few years have in store for us and for my baking!!
Apparently, Starkville is known as “Stark Vegas” because it is such a happening town. When we saw this painting, we knew that it was ours. It is a mix of southern and Vegas, just like us!!
