Rubik’s Cube Cake

I like to do a fun cake for hubby’s birthday. Last year was a Mario cake, but this year I went a little more simple. I was searching around for ideas and saw some rubik’s cube cakes out there. I liked the look of it and knew that I could do it. I had already made him a pie and cupcakes, so a small cake was perfect.

This was incredibly simple to do. The cakes baked up beautifully and it was possibly the best chocolate cake I have made. The rest was pretty basic—cover with black fondant and have the colored fondant done in squares. It had to be easy since I only had a day to do it. Lucky for me that it worked. Smile

I had all of my colored fondant ready to go. It was rolled out to about 1/8 of an inch thickness. I set the aside to dry up a bit before going on the cake. The next time  I do this, I will make them a day ahead so that they are completely dry and hard. You need to cut out 9 of each color.

The black fondant was rolled out and then went on the crumb coated cake. I had the cake already frosted and in the fridge so that the buttercream was set. My one complaint about this cake was the black fondant. I had some leftover Duff fondant and decided to use this to cover the cake instead of making my own. No one ever eats it and I just didn’t have to time to make any. NEVER AGAIN!! I was so mad about this fondant. I hate it. It is too soft and stretches and tears. It is awful. Now I would never use the wilton kind to cover a cake because it just smells bad, so I know it can’t taste good. I had such high hopes for this Duff stuff. But they went bye bye.

Maybe you will have better luck with that kind. But, as for me, I will be sticking to the homemade kind to cover cakes. I am gonna order some other brands and try them out. So who knows….maybe I can find a new favorite soon.

Once I had it covered in the black and I stopped complaining about how much I hated it, I went to work on placing the squares. The black was so soft that I didn’t have to use water to stick on the squares. I spaced out the top and then went to work on all of the sides. It came together in about 30 minutes.

I was super happy with how this one turned out. I love to make cakes and they are even better when it is for someone special. Hubs loved it and that is the best part for me!! Enjoy!!

I just came across your blog by accident today and I am so happy I did. I love what you do and hope to get as good as this one day. I am currently in culinary school. When I make my cakes I use Satin Ice fondant. It is one of the better tasting fondants. With three kids under the age of 4 I don’t always have time to make homemade.
